A selection of ideas that you can pick and chose from to make your life that
little more environmentally friendly - and save money while ya do it!
~~~~~~~~~ This one's from
my landlady, Sallie...
Take a load of those empty plastic milk bottles you would normally recycle
(at least i hope you do), wash them
out, put the tops back on and put them in your fridge and freezer to fill up any
empty space. What this does is that when you open the door and all the warm air
blows in from the room, a lot less warm air blows in thus the fridge or freezer
doesn't have to waste a load of electric chilling down the warm air after you've
closed the door. It'll also keep your food cooler as all that warm air is warming
your food as well making it go off quicker. In a large fridge or freezer
that's getting regular use this can save quite a few pounds worth of electric
every year. Good for your pocket, good for your food and good for the environment
all at the same time. ~~~~~~~~~ Get a
bicycle, fit it with a rear rack and get a couple of large bags for the
rack. Now use that to do all your shopping with instead of your car. Not only
will you save money in these days of rising fuel prices, but you'll also get a
well nice bum from all that wonderful low impact excercise.
~~~~~~~~~ Buy
cotton floor/dish cloths and use them instead of synthetic dish cloths. A cotton
floor cloth, thrown in the weekly wash to keep it clean, will last for at least
a year. They are better at cleaning than synthetic cloths, more absorbant, cheaper
in the long term cause they last longer, and when they do eventually fall to pieces
they can be thrown in the compost bin because they're bio degradable.
If you can't find cotton floor cloths (try ebay), go to your local wool shop and
buy some dish cloth cotton and knit, or crochet, your own. And you haven't got
to be good at knitting or crochet to make a dish cloth, in fact it's a very good
way to learn and practice basic stitches.
~~~~~~~~~ Only
buy line caught fish. If people only bought line caught fish then the seas and
oceans wouldn't be so totally screwed up and there would actually be a lot more
fish to eat in the long term. If your supermarket or fishmonger doesn't state
whether something is line or net caught then don't buy any fish from them.
You can find out more about active gear fishing here.
There is simply no need to rape the seas in this fashion, it causes incredible
damage to the marine eco systems which in turn is massively depleting the fish
stocks. ~~~~~~~~~
